A place for posts that haven’t been tidied up yet…

You could have recess all day everyday…

A and I have started to talk real-estate.  We know we love our little house.  This house was a POS, and A snatched it up and really flipped it hard to make it not only habitable but beautiful as well.  It was so bad that when he took me here on our 3rd date to show me the house he had bought, I had serious worries about his mental health.  The house had been neglected and run down for years, and he bought it as is.  When something is marketed as “as is” a little red flag should go up in most people’s minds.  In A’s mind, “as is” means “yay! projects!”, and that’s exactly what this house became: the land of projects.

Everything, and I mean everything, in our house was replaced, redone, or repaired.  Here’s a running list of things that we did in two years:  new water heater, new furnace, new duct work, new electrical, new plumbing, all new kitchen, new porch addition, new deck, all new windows and doors, all new lighting, new doorbell, new thermostat and smoke detector, new bathroom, repaired a/c unit, restored wood floors, painted everything, water-proofed the basement, and did landscaping.  And throughout all of these projects, we’ve filled numerous rented dumpsters.  In addition to all of this, our future plans include a new roof, and a basement bathroom.  We aren’t really sure though if we should sink anymore money into what we lovingly call “the money pit”.

We have started to realize that we will have to sell and move away from our little love nest once our little family expands hopefully in two or three years.  We have spoken on sereral occasions that our next house will not be a “project house” since our project du jour will most likely be raising a child.  In a moment of preempted excitement, I did a search for homes for sale in our area.  Amongst all the usual rabbel, I found the mother of all projects.  It’s an old school house that has been rezoned into residential property.  It has 6700 square feet which is about seven times the amount of space we have right now.  Take a peek…

And guess what…it’s being sold “as is”.  I think it’s a sign.

So funny…

This video really has no place on my blog other than the fact that I found it highly amusing.  I hope you get a kick out of it!

Very last minute, A and I decided to go on a road trip to visit his brother and sister-in-law in Minneapolis.  We are here shopping and eating and fishing and drinking.  I’ll be back on Monday!  Have a beautiful weekend!  ~JB

Under Construction…

Hi, folks.  Today, I am revamping my blog roll.  Up until now, all the links were under only three general categories, and I found myself kind of lost in it.  I am experimenting to see if I like seperating the wedding links into things like design, brides, flowers, stationers, etc…or if I’d rather go back to one big list.  If you have a thought one way or another, feel free to give me some feedback!  ~JB

All good things come to me in the shower…

Morning, pigeons!  I feel bouncy this morning.  Why?  Well…I think that I’ve found my voice.  If any of you have been following along this week, you know that you had a homework assignment to figure out what is going well with your blog (if you have one) and what could be improved based off of Kim Bee’s becoming a better blogger list.  I knew that a weak point for my blog was that as I had just started, I wasn’t really sure if I had any cohesiveness.  My posts are really random and cover lots of different topics.  What was my voice going to be as this blog continues?

Oh, I don’t suppose that I haaaaaaaave to have a point, but the blogs that I admire most have a point.  They are focused and stylized and successful.  I’d like to have those attributes associated with this blog as well.  But how…

I was standing in the shower yesterday when I had a breakthrough.  This often happens in the shower.  Why?  I don’t get it.  If you have a wonderful idea, you always want to share it, right?  Well who am I going to talk to in the shower, I ask?  You see the dilemma.  So then, the excitement grows as I try to hurry through all the showerly duties so that I can get out and talk to someone.  By the time I actually run into someone, it’s often the guy holding the stop sign by the construction site on my way to work.  Something tells me that he doesn’t care about my blog.  So I continue on…

So here is my breakthrough:  I’d like this blog to be a resource for people.  Wow.  That’s vague.  Let me be more specific.

By resource I mean a beautifully designed website/blog with optimisim and integrety where people can browse for accurate and current wedding related inspiration, projects, and opportunites.

By people, I mean local brides, grooms, family, friends, guests, businesses, artists, etc.

I really feel like the “people” was my major breakthrough in the shower.  By “local” I mean to the Quad Cities which is an community that spans the Iowa/Illinois border.  We have a few web directories of local vendors, but there is no interaction.  There needs to be a network built between all of these people that is reliable and profitable for all who use it.  For those of you who are not “local” to me, no worries!  I am keeping my personal blog seperate from this other project…

I have a million ideas for this project, and yesterday, I contacted Donna, the head honcho at QC Weddings Online, a local wedding website, to let her know about my interest in developing this project.  She is going to be checking out this lil’ blog sometime this week and getting back to me…I will keep you all posted on the developments!

Doe, A Deer…What is my voice??

Okay, I’ve read the article posted yesterday a few times.  Out of all the wonderful tips that Kim Bee gives us, I think one of the most important is her advice on honing in on a tone for your blog.  When I first started out, wedding blogs were wedding blogs, and there weren’t any kind of differentiation.  As you can see by my blog roll, I have no organization system at this point.  Maybe that’s because I have not pin pointed my own voice in my blog.

Am I an advice blog?  Not really because I don’t know what I’m talking about.

Am I a style blog?  Well, I don’t really have many original ideas.  I mostly see things that I like and say, “Hey, I like that.”  Is that style?  Maybe that’s what I am.

Am I a reflection blog?  Definitely.  I mean…I try to post truthfully about my blunders and successes.  I think my aim is to organize my muddled thoughts, and if I also entertain a few folks along the way, well bonus!

So I am still working on trying to figure out exactly what I am doing here.  When I figure it out, you all will know ’cause I’ll be shouting from the rooftops, “I’M A _______ BLOG!!!!”  You’ll hear me.

In the interim while I am trying to figure out my voice, I have something to share with you that is completely non-wedding related, but it tickles me pink.  I hope it will give you a cheerful start to your Monday morning…

Boning up on Blogging…New Links

As this little blog has plugged along, I’ve realized how much I enjoy the writing and the research.  I think it’s what I’m supposed to be doing.

Have I told you all that I am in school right now?  I’m getting my masters in Library and Information Science.  Specifically, I won a grant to pay for my schooling so that myself and 39 other recruits could fill the shortage of school librarians in Iowa.  This degree will equip me to follow many paths:  I could be a school librarian, collegiate librarian, private collections librarian, public librarian, or, my favorite, the coorporate librarian, aka a spy for a company that can afford to pay for it.

Anyhoo, as my classes have ticked on by, I have picked up many valuable tools that would be handy in researching anything.  Specifically, I enjoy researching weddings and entertaining (duh), cooking, literature, and anything else that strikes my fancy as beautiful or interesting.

I admire the people who run blogs that have evolved into their (more than) full time blog, and in my wildest dreams, I aspire to be one of them.  I realize that the competition for top slots in this field are few and far between, but that doesn’t mean that I couldn’t try.  I love this role that I’ve been playing since I started my blog: researcher, coveter, and commenter.  It’s fabulous, and it makes me happy.  What more is there, right?

Recently Mrs. Bee at WeddingBeePro posted an article entitled, “Become a Better Business Blogger“.  I am assigning myself (and any other asipring bloggers out there) to read this today.  Leave a comment below on something that you’re already doing to contribute to your blog and something that you’d like to add/change/delete for the health of your blog.
